Special Students
Special students are students who seek admissions for course credit in order to meet special educational needs, but do not wish to take all the required curriculum courses leading to the associate degree, diploma, or certificate. The special student is required to submit an admissions application but is not required to meet regular admissions requirements. Special students are required to meet academic pre-requisites to gain admission to certain courses. Such a student may take up to fifteen credit hours of instruction without meeting regular admission requirements for acceptance into a program of study. Dual Enrollment

The Brunswick County board of Education and Brunswick Community College encourage young people to complete high school before seeking admission to BCC. High School students meeting the following criteria may be admitted to BCC courses:

  1. The student must be at least 16 years of age, and enrollment action must be initiated by the public school in which the student is enrolled.
  2. The individual student's program must be approved by the principal of the high school and the Admissions Office of Brunswick Community College;
  3. The student must be taking at least three non-block schedule or two block schedule courses as his/her high school and must be making satisfactory progress toward graduation as determined by his/her high school principal; and,
  4. A student who wishes to enroll in College Transfer courses must meet course pre-requisites by making appropriate scores on the ACT ASSET/COMPASS Assessment Inventory offered at Brunswick Community College. In some cases SAT Verbal and Math test scores may be substituted for ACT ASSET/COMPASS scores. Admission to math and science courses requires an appropriate score on the ACT ASSET/COMPASS Algebra inventory.

Gifted and Talented Students

Students less than 16 years of age who are mature enough to function well in an adult education setting and are intellectually gifted may be admitted to Brunswick Community College. The student must demonstrate giftedness by scoring in the range from the 92 nd percentile to the 99 th percentile on an aptitude and an achievement test selected from a list of tests approved by the State Board of Community Colleges. This approved list of tests is available in the Admissions Office.

Students under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or their designee while on campus. Students less than 16 years of age shall not displace adults, but may be admitted any semester on a space-available basis to any curriculum course at the one-hundred level and above. The student is responsible for all tuition and fees. For more information on admission under the Gifted and Talented statute, contact the Admissions Office.

Advanced Placement Program

A student may receive semester hour credit based on the Advanced Placement Examination of The College Board. Students who take the Advanced Placement Examinations should have test scores sent to Student Development directly from The College Board. Once the score report has been received, examinations with scores of 3 or higher are awarded credit as follows:

Brunswick County
The county was formed in 1764 from parts of Bladen County and New Hanover County. It was named for the colonial port of Brunswick, NC (now in ruins) which was itself named for Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg ; at the time held by the British kings of the House of Hanover .

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2,720 km² (1,050 mi² ). 2,214 km² (855 mi²) of it is land and 506 km² (195 mi²) of it (18.59%) is water.

Brunswick County has an annual average high temperature of 73 degrees and an average low of 51 degrees Fahrenheit, the sub-tropical climate keeps outdoor activities enjoyable year-round.  

The county is divided into six townships : Lockwoods Folly, Northwest, Shallotte, Smithville, Town Creek, and Waccamaw.
