Performance Rating

The employee's performance will be rated in three levels. Those levels and definitions follow:

Performance Rating Scale

Rating Level Definition

1 Below Expectations Needs improvement; work acceptable in some
areas; often does not meet expectations.

2 Meets Expectations Meets major job requirements; fully acceptable
professional performance.

3 Exceeds Expectations Exceptional performance; substantially exceeds
job requirements

The following steps should be followed in order to complete the evaluation for each employee:

1. Job Description:

Before beginning to complete the evaluation form for full-time, non-supervisory and supervisory employees, review the job description for the employee to make sure you understand the duties of the position and to determine whether the employee is fulfilling the required duties. If it is determined that the duties and responsibilities of the position have changed, the supervisor should update the job description and submit it to the Personnel Office or request a job audit.

Job description review is not necessary for faculty members. The form for faculty provides for evaluation of classroom observations by the supervisor.

2. Performance:

Rate the employee on each of the factors listed, based on the job requirements, College policies and procedures, etc., and expectations of performance .

3. Improvement:

Identify areas of improvement, either to meet or exceed expectations and list specific steps (including professional development activities) the employee can take to improve his/her performance rating and job performance.

4. Meet With Employee:

After completing the evaluation form, make a copy for the employee to review and set a time to discuss the evaluation. Make sure employee understands that he/she can submit comments regarding the evaluation. Also, make sure the employee understands that his/her signature means that the evaluation has been discussed, not that he/she agrees with the evaluation.

5. Submit Evaluation Form:

After discussing the evaluation with the employee, print a copy and sign it and have the employee sign in the appropriate place. Send the original form to the departmental vice-president for his/her review. The vice-president will then send the evaluation form to the Personnel Office.

This Employee Performance Evaluation System has been developed to provide a system of performance evaluation for all full-time faculty and staff as well as regular part-time and 30-hour employees of the College. Supervisors should use the system as an opportunity to have open discussions with employees regarding their performance and professional development needs.

PROCEDURES
Performance evaluations will be conducted during March and April of each year and are required for all full-time, regular part-time and 30-hour employees. The process should begin in March and be completed no later than April 30th. All required forms will be found on the College web page, can be completed on the computer, and printed for submission to the Personnel Office.
