Conduct

Self-discipline is an essential element of individual learning and development. Accordingly, all students are expected to conduct themselves as mature, responsible citizens in accordance with public laws and accepted standards of morality and decency. As such, a person: is courteous to fellow students, faculty, staff members, and to the public; is honest in academic work and in his/her dealings with others; obeys local, state, and national laws; respects the property of the College, fellow students, and others; exercises care in the use of books, furniture, tools, equipment, and buildings; and obeys the Code of Student Conduct.

Any action performed on the campus of Brunswick Community College or at any activity sponsored by or officially affiliated with the College will be defined as being in violation of the Code of Student Conduct if: the action disrupts the educational process; the action directly precipitates physical violence resulting in bodily injury or property damage; or if the action is a violation of duly established regulations of Brunswick County, the State of North Carolina, or the United States of America.

Code of Student Conduct

It is very student's responsibility at Brunswick Community College to obey the Code of Student Conduct which ( 1 ) specifically prohibits lying, cheating, or stealing when these actions involve academic processes; administration of the College; student, academic, or administrative personnel acting in an official capacity; and ( 2 ) requires the student to report any violation of which he/she has knowledge. It shall be the further responsibility of every student to abide by the Code of Student Conduct, namely, to conduct oneself so as not to impair the welfare or the educational opportunities of others in the Brunswick Community College community.

Offenses prescribed above shall include, but shall not be limited to, those additional individual and group offenses specified in detail in the Student's Rights and Responsibilities section of the Student Handbook. Established procedures for the conduct of campus judicial hearings and an explanation of applicable sanctions .

Grievance Procedures

All grievance procedures are listed in the Student Handbook. In matters pertaining to student conduct or suspensions, any student who feels he/she has been treated unjustly may present his case to the Student Development Committee. The committee will review all cases and make an appropriate recommendation to the Brunswick Community College President.

In all disciplinary cases, due process procedures are followed and include the right to a hearing, presentation of charges in writing, the right to counsel chosen by the accused, etc. The results of the hearing are presented in writing.

All academic grievances should be referred to the Vice President for Instruction. See Due Process for Grade Appeal .

Counseling Services

Counseling services are provided by trained personnel. These services are available to students from pre-admission through graduation. Counselors can assist students with personal concerns, educational planning, problem solving, goal setting, study habits, career, transfer to another college or university, and general information.
