The Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides students, faculty, staff, and the community the opportunity to pursue both intellectual freedom and lifelong education.

The LRC's large selection of materials and resources combines with alternative instructional delivery methods to support the curriculum of the College, all while following the principles of the American Library Association's Bill of Rights and Freedom to view.

The Library's book collection is over fifteen thousand volumes, and subscriptions are maintained to over one hundred periodicals.   Electronic resources include the holdings catalog, CCLINC, the Internet, and NC LIVE .

Circulation.      A picture ID is required to check out materials from the regular library collection, to check out materials on reserve, to use the Internet, and to request materials from Interlibrary Loan.  Books and audio tapes may be checked out for three weeks.  All renewals must be made in person with the material and ID card in hand.  Reference books, periodicals, and some special materials are not available for circulation.   Overdue fines, replacement fees, and/or administrative fees apply to all items which are returned late or are lost.

Interlibrary Loan services are provided using the Community College Libraries in North Carolina (CCLINC) system. Click Here for More Information about ILL.

How do I find a book on the shelf using the call number?

Look at the call number you found in iLink and you will see that it begins with a letter or letters. Books are arranged in alphabetical order with items assigned a single letter first followed by the items with two letters, and then any items with three letters.

Once you find the shelf area with the correct letters you will find materials organized in whole number order. An example of the LC call number arrangement and an explanation for the order is given below.

General Library Information

What can I check out of the library?
Curriculum students can be borrow up to ten items at one time and include materials from the general collection, the early childhood education collection or audio collection. Materials from the reserve collection vary according to the request of the instructor. Periodicals and reference books must be used in the library.
When is it due and can it be renewed?
The usual loan period is three weeks with one renewal. Semester breaks and holidays can alter the loan period slightly. Due dates for ILL books vary and they cannot be renewed. Books can be returned after hours using the drop box located outside under the front steps of building A. Please do not use this box to return audiovisual materials.
What is the reserve collection?
Instructors bring materials to the library for their students to use as a supplement to classroom instruction. Reserve items are not limited to books or to items owned by the library. Most materials in the reserve collection must be used in the library but loan periods can vary depending on course and the instructor.
Where can I find current information?
Periodicals are the most reliable source of current information for research projects and other assignments. Current issues of select periodicals can be found on display in the library. These periodicals include local and regional newspapers, magazines and professional or scientific journals.

Articles on a specific topic can be found on the Internet using an information gateway known as NC LIVE. Computer workstations on campus can access NC LIVE without a password. Students who would like to use NC LIVE at home must stop by the library and ask for a password. The url address is http://www.nclive.org.

http://www.louise.nccommunitycolleges.edu
Any computer with Internet access can be used to view the library catalog. The catalog, also known as iLink, includes books, audiovisual materials and course reserves. BCC is a member of the Community College Libraries in North Carolina or CCLINC consortium. Forty-four North Carolina community colleges share this catalog of well over a million resources. You can search the local collection or the entire database. Most items found at another library in the system can be borrowed. Exceptions include materials from special collections such as the audiovisual, reference and reserve materials.

ID CARDS Brunswick Community College

The Brunswick Community College Identification Card is also used as a library card. The barcode printed on the back of the card is scanned into the library computer system to check out materials. It and the item are required to check out or renew all library materials including course reserves.

College ID cards are made by the library staff and are made in the student center on registration day of each semester. Students are encouraged to have their card made on registration day. Although cards can be made in the library at a later time, it takes more time to process as the staff will also be providing library services.

Proof of identity and affiliation is required to have a card made. A replacement card is five dollars. Questions regarding College ID cards should be directed to the library.

SUMMARY
Have your card with you while on campus so that you can have access to college resources and services. The same card will be used from year to year so do not toss it out just because you are not on campus for a period of time. Broken cards can be returned to the library for a free replacement. Part(s) of the card must be returned to get a free replacement.

What is a call number and what do I need from the computer to find an item in the library?

Each book or audiovisual item in the library collection has a unique call number. It represents the location of the item and can be found on the spine of each book and in the item record listed in the iLink. When selecting books to use from the iLink it is a good idea to write down the complete call number and the first few words of the title. This will help in finding the book on the shelf.

How is the library collection organized?

Like many academic libraries in the United States , BCC uses the Library of Congress Classification System to organize materials. A letter of the alphabet is assigned to an area of knowledge. All subjects fit within one of the twenty one divisions. Each of these broad subject areas are divided using a second and sometimes third letter of the alphabet. Then each area is subdivided by adding a whole number between one and nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine. Subjects can be divided again as needed by adding a decimal point after the whole number. The next part of the call number usually represents the authors' last name. The year of publication is the last part of the call number.

Reference books, course reserves, audiovisual materials and the early childhood education materials are special and are not located with the general collection of books. Works of fiction are included within section P which includes literature.

How do you search the online catalog?
All of the CCLINC libraries are listed on the opening screen. Clicking on Brunswick Community College from this screen will take you to the main search screen. A blank text box is located in the middle of the screen and to the right is another text box with “words or phrase.” This is the default search choice which can be changed to author or title. It will be set to search the Brunswick Community College Library but this can be changed to ALL to search for books in the entire database. English is the default language but it can be changed to one of the six languages listed below the search box.
