New at BCC, Marine Biotechnology

BOLIVIA, NC – Brunswick Community College (BCC) announced today that it will offer a new degree program this fall.

The new program, an Associate in Applied Science degree in Marine Biotechnology, will be offered beginning in the fall semester, which starts August 18, 2014.  Brunswick Community College the only Community College in NC that currently offers Marine Biotechnology.

The Biotechnology curriculum, which has emerged from molecular biology and chemical engineering, is designed to meet the increasing demands for skilled laboratory technicians in various fields of biological and chemical technology.  Marine Biotechnology focuses on the scientific study of the ecology and behavior of microbes, plants, and animals inhabiting aquatic environments.  Course work will emphasize biology, chemistry, mathematics, and technical communications.

“Brunswick Community College has been providing career-focused education since 1979, and we pride ourselves on preparing students for their given careers,” said Gina Robinson, Brunswick Community College’s Dean of Professional & Technical Programs.

Graduates of BCC’s Marine Biotechnology program will acquire core competencies that can be applied to a variety of careers, including research assistant to a biologist or chemist, laboratory technician/instrumentation technician, and quality control/quality assurance technician.

Upon successful completion of the program, many graduates pursue entry-level positions in various areas of industry and government, including research and development, manufacturing, sales, and customer service.

Classes will be offered with seated, online and hybrid options.  “By giving students the option of taking classes online, on campus, or a combination of the two, we are offering the ultimate in convenience,” Robinson said.  “Many of our students are parents who work full-time jobs.  To pursue higher education, they require a flexible class schedule that doesn’t disrupt their day-to-day lives.  Brunswick Community College meets that requirement by offering classes in the day, evening, on campus and online.”
