Professional & Technical – Basic Law Enforcement Training

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to: criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.

Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate.

Your Life As a Basic Law Enforcement Training Student

Potential Opportunities with BLET

This program is for adults desiring a career in law enforcement.  Individuals seeking careers in the police or sheriff’s departments, traffic enforcement, K-9 units, Dare Program, or detention areas must complete this 624-hour program.

Getting Started 

BLET has special admission requirements.  Students seeking admission to this program must:

  • Be a US Citizen of good moral character
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (correspondence diplomas are not accepted)
  • Make a satisfactory placement score on the Compass Test
  • Have or have the ability to obtain a valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
  • Pass criminal history and background checks

Please contact BLET Director Lt. Taunton well in advance as the admissions process could take four to six weeks.  The BLET Director approves all state-approved forms.  Space is limited to 24 students and classes are offered multiple times each year.

BCC students may request a tuition waiver from local law enforcement agencies by way of a sponsorship.  Cost of uniforms, textbooks, and other fees apply.
