Local college, airport teaming up to train for in-demand jobs

There’s a big demand for air traffic controllers because most of the current workforce is getting ready to retire.OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – There’s a big demand across the country for more air traffic controller jobs. The Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island is teaming up with Brunswick Community College to help students get those jobs.
FAA spokesperson Kathleen Berger said there’s a big demand for air traffic controllers because most of the current workforce is getting ready to retire. Now airports all across the United States are trying to train younger people to fill these rolls.
The Cape Fear Regional Jetport has been in negotiations with Brunswick Community College for years. Officials at the airport are hoping to get their own tower and a classroom to train their students and prepare them for jobs after college.
Airport officials are still in the very early stages of negotiations so this project may not get off the ground for a couple more years.
Airport director Howie Franklin said this kind of a program is a great way to create jobs for local people.
“There is always a need for air traffic control operators,” Franklin said. “It’s a good job, with a good future, and it’s got a need. It’s got a demand and we’re looking forward to it.”
Franklin said this program would be a good first step for students who want to get their foot in the door early.
