Sustainability at Brunswick Community College

As a two-year institution of higher education located in Brunswick County the most Southeastern coastal plain county in North Carolina, Brunswick Community College has a culture interested in the area’s natural wonders and history.  Brunswick County is surrounded by wetlands and forests, the home of the Venus Fly Trap and Long Leaf Pines, coastal plain streams and lakes, lush marshes and Carolina Bays, reservoirs and estuaries in a very biodiverse region, and a rich history and heritage. The college has a variety of unique programs: Aquaculture, Aquaponics, and Marine Biotechnology (only two year program in the US) in addition to green building practices incorporated into the different construction trades in Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) programs.  In 2015, the College launched its first Ecotourism program highlighting area ecosystems, history, and heritage.

The college maintains 66 plus acres surrounded by forests, wetlands, and walking trails. The site is designated as a NC Birding Trail site.  BCC also maintains a college-level Sustainability Committee established in 2010. The College approved its first campus sustainability plan in May of 2015.  It has three guiding Pillars that drives the on-campus initiative:  To be Aware of our surroundings, to Renew goals as it relates to sustainability, and to Excel through our actions.
