911 Communication and Operations (A55470)

The 911 Communication and Operations program provides new students, as well as current practitioners, with emergency communication knowledge and skills needed to enter or advance in an emergency communications career.

Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.

Brunswick Community College has partnered with Richmond Community College for BCC students to complete this degree program.  Students complete the general education courses at BCC, and the direct 911 courses through Richmond Community College.  Richmond Community College provides the 911 courses in an online environment and students complete the Work Based Learning portion of the program at various locations throughout the county.

Graduates should qualify for employment and advancement in the public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers, including local government emergency communications centers, county sheriffs’ offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management, and related emergency dispatch operations.

Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.

Graduates should qualify for employment and advancement in the public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers, including local government emergency communications centers, county sheriffs’ offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management, and related emergency dispatch operations.

*BCC is authorized to offer select courses leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree in 911 Communications and Operations through a collaborative agreement with Richmond Community College.  Richmond Community College will award the Associate in Applied Science Degree to any student successfully completing all the state requirements of their program.

All required courses at Richmond Community College can be completed 100% online. Please speak to your advisor if you have taken courses at another college or university.

A criminal background check may be required as a condition of employment in the 911 Emergency Communication field.
