BCC Food Pantry Fuels Learning

Did you know that BCC runs a food pantry for students in need?  It was started nearly 15 years ago by Julianna (Julie) Olsen, BCC Director, Disability Resources & Student Life. “You can’t learn if you’re hungry,” said Julie. “All too often, students would come to campus without having eaten and with nowhere to turn. Staff members started collecting food informally and, over the years, we formalized the effort, creating our own food pantry.”

Housed on the first floor in Building A, the food pantry offers ready-to-eat and non-perishable items, as well as feminine hygiene products and basic toiletries. Students can come for a snack, or a whole bag of food and special deliveries can be arranged.

BCC is grateful to community organizations, like PORCH, that help keep the pantry stocked. “Donations are always welcome,” said Julie. “Some of the most-needed items include microwavable meals, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, pasta, sauce, soups, macaroni & cheese, as well toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies. We want students to know that we’re here to help and that they should never be shy about asking. We care about each and every one of you.”
